I’ve been trying to stand back and look at the entirety of what Trump (or his Project 2025 puppet masters) is actually doing.

The first clue is in the construction: bunker under the ballroom/triumphal Trumphal arch/Nazi eagle on the White House facade/tacky gold fittings. Most are funded by megaMaga donors. Will Trump walk away gracefully from those personal aggrandisements at the end of this Term? I think not.

The second clue is in the dismantling of any and all institutional structures which stand in his way. Justice (holding on by a thread). The Departments of State, now full of place people like ex estate agents or property developers. Or his son in law or his sons. The CIA stripped of its agents and professionals. National Intelligence - ……..? The Inspectors General - gone. The Chiefs of Staff - purged. Christian nationalists and Christian Zionists influencing policy.

The third clue is the final nail in the coffin. The rejection of International law; the complete disregard for U.S. laws; the flagrant violation of norms. Set those alongside the daily vituperative stream of anti-socialist rhetoric - now called communism - and the fate of democracy is sealed.

All funded by Thiel, Musk, Ellison et al. Thiel believes that capitalism and democracy cannot coexist. Sprinkle some Palantir on top, and voila!

A President who has absolutely no intention of leaving office. Even if the midterms are allowed to go ahead, the “results” will be massaged.

Welcome to a dystrumpian future.

The problem with hard right and hard left is their belief that people who disagree with them are traitors. Therefore it is necessary to remove them from any possibility that they might win the next election or successfully challenge some proposals that you make. Trump started by denying research funds to the universities, sued major newspapers, even the BBC, and has gone on to start a war he cannot hope to win. He has already doubled the National Debt, which he will not be here to have to pay (assuming he ever pays tax) and may declare Martial Law and postpone the Midterms until 2028. There is still no indication that the people who voted him into office are deserting the Republican Party.

I wish I shared your optimism that recovery is so easy. Or even possible. Maybe I’ve been reading too much of Geoff Anderson’s history of the US right in the last 60-70 years. https://www.sweatyspice.com/

It’s a depressing - but maybe necessary- read
